Take a baseline before redesigning
Record current URLs, rankings, Search Console queries, organic landing pages, backlinks, metadata, headings, internal links and pages that generate enquiries.
This baseline tells you what must be protected and what can safely change.
Protect important URLs and redirects
If a page already ranks and still serves the same intent, keeping the URL is often safest. If a URL must change, the redirect should point to the most relevant new page.
Avoid redirecting everything to the homepage. That destroys useful relevance and creates a poor user experience.
Do not casually rewrite metadata, headings or content
Title tags, descriptions, H1s, important H2s and ranking content should be treated as assets. Improve only when there is a clear reason, not because a redesign is happening.
If the new page changes search intent, rankings can change with it.
Monitor after launch
After launch, check indexability, canonicals, redirects, sitemap URLs, broken links, analytics, form submissions, speed and Search Console coverage.
Small technical issues caught in the first few days are usually much easier to fix than ranking drops discovered weeks later.
FAQ
Will a redesign always affect rankings?
Not always. A careful redesign can preserve or improve visibility, but careless URL, content, metadata or internal link changes can cause losses.
Should old website pages be deleted during a redesign?
Only when they have no value and no suitable replacement. Useful pages should be preserved, improved or redirected carefully.
