What a local search actually tells you
Search engines show businesses that are relevant, close to you and well established online. That makes a local search a good way to build a shortlist. It tells you very little about quality, because anyone can optimise a listing.
Treat the first page of results as a list of names to investigate, then judge each on evidence: the work they have shipped, the people who did it and what happens after launch.
Look at the portfolio properly
A good portfolio shows finished, live websites for real businesses, ideally with a short account of the problem, the solution and the result. Be cautious of galleries that show only screenshots, or concept designs for businesses that do not exist.
Open the live sites on your phone. Check how quickly they load, whether the navigation makes sense and whether the contact route is obvious. You can see how we present our own projects, including the technology and the outcome of each, on the portfolio and case studies page.
Find out who actually builds the website
Some agencies sell the project and then hand the build to a white-label provider or an overseas contractor. That is not automatically a problem, but you should know. Ask who designs it, who writes the code and who you will speak to when something needs changing.
A team that designs and develops in-house can answer technical questions directly and fix problems without passing messages along a chain. It is one reason we describe our approach as bespoke web development rather than template assembly.
Ask who is responsible for hosting, security and backups
Many businesses discover after launch that nobody owns hosting, updates or recovery. Ask directly: where is the site hosted, who applies security updates, how often are backups taken and how quickly can the site be restored?
If the answer is that it is up to you, factor in the time or the extra supplier that implies. Some agencies bundle this into a monthly plan, which is the model behind our managed website services.
Check what SEO and performance actually means
Almost every agency says its websites are SEO-friendly. Ask what that includes: page structure, titles and descriptions, structured data, redirects when replacing an old site and page speed on mobile.
Be wary of anyone who guarantees a position on Google. Rankings depend on competition and cannot be promised. A sound agency will tell you what it does to give the site strong foundations and will be honest about what it cannot control. Our own approach to this is set out on the SEO services page.
Read the contract for ownership and exit terms
Before you sign, find out who owns the design, the code and the content, what happens to your domain and what you can take with you if you leave. Check the minimum term, the notice period and whether the monthly fee covers the things you expect.
Clear, plain-English terms are a good sign. Vague terms, or a refusal to explain them, are a reason to keep looking.
Local versus remote: when location genuinely helps
Being nearby helps when you want to meet in person, when the project involves photography or on-site work, or when you value dealing with a team that understands your regional market. It matters less for the design and development itself, which most agencies run by video and email anyway.
Our studio is in Wolverhampton and we work with businesses across the West Midlands and the rest of the UK. If you are weighing up a web design company in Wolverhampton against one further away, judge both by the same criteria in this article, then let convenience break the tie.
Ten questions worth asking every agency
Who will build my site and who will I deal with day to day? Can I see live examples in my sector or a similar one? What is included after launch, and what costs extra? Who owns the website, the code and the content? Where is it hosted and how is it backed up? How do you handle security updates? How do you approach SEO and redirects? What does a typical timeline look like? What happens if I want to leave? Can I speak to a past client?
Compare the answers side by side. The agency that answers plainly and shows evidence is usually the safer choice, whichever side of town it is on.
FAQ
Is the closest web design company the best choice?
Not necessarily. Proximity helps with meetings and regional understanding, but portfolio quality, in-house capability, ongoing support and clear terms matter more to the result.
How do I compare web design companies fairly?
Ask each one the same questions about who builds the site, what is included after launch, who owns the work and how hosting, security and backups are handled, then compare the answers.
Should I worry if an agency will not guarantee a Google ranking?
No. Reputable agencies do not guarantee rankings because search results depend on competition and factors nobody controls. Be more cautious of those who do.
Do I need an agency that is based near me?
Not always. Many projects run well by video and email. Location helps when you want face-to-face meetings or a team that knows your regional market.
