Full case study

A website rebuilt as a business platform

Georgie’s Canal Cruises now has more than a redesigned website. The business has a custom digital platform built around the real operation, giving customers a clearer booking experience while giving staff a more connected way to manage cruises, payments, food orders, vouchers, communication and reporting.

Short project summary

VV Design rebuilt Georgie’s Canal Cruises’ public website on the client’s required CMS and created CruiseFlow, a bespoke operations platform for bookings, payments, vouchers, food preorders, customer communication, staff access and reporting. The project included custom theme development, data migration, SEO preservation, managed hosting and ongoing support.

Discovery inside the business

The project started by understanding how Georgie’s Canal Cruises works day to day: how bookings are handled, how cruises are planned, how food orders reach the kitchen, how staff communicate and where customers need support.

Custom website on the client required CMS

The public website was rebuilt on the client’s required CMS with a fully custom theme focused on cruise discovery, mobile browsing, booking confidence, performance and search visibility.

CruiseFlow operational platform

CruiseFlow was built specifically for the business rather than forced around a generic booking tool. It supports scheduled cruises, private hire, parties, events, two boats, seat capacity, odd-number booking logic, staff rota planning and overbooking protection.

  • Cruise and event management
  • Booking and capacity control
  • Customer history
  • Staff rota planning
  • Staff access levels
  • Employee activity logs

Food ordering and kitchen visibility

Meal choices are built directly into the booking process, including included meals, paid extras and allergy information. CruiseFlow turns those choices into kitchen summaries and serving information so staff can see what needs to be prepared and served.

Payments, vouchers and refunds

The platform supports Stripe, vouchers, pay-on-arrival cash and pay-on-arrival card workflows. Mixed payments are also supported, including voucher and card combinations, multiple vouchers on one booking, partial voucher balances and refund handling.

Automated customer communication

Branded automated emails were added across the customer journey, including booking confirmations, reminders and post-cruise messages. The confirmation email uses a classic ticket-inspired layout to make the experience feel more polished and memorable.

Migration and consolidation

A custom migration process helped consolidate historic operational data into the new CruiseFlow structure while preserving important customer, booking and SEO information.

Managed hosting and ongoing support

The platform is hosted on cloud VPS infrastructure managed by VV Design, with firewall protection, monitoring alerts, automated updates, manual maintenance and a structured backup process. The project continues as an ongoing digital partnership.

Project goals

Georgie’s Canal Cruises is a growing business that had moved beyond a standard website and booking setup. The team needed a stronger digital platform to support bookings, cruise planning, payments, food orders, customer communication, staff access, reporting and the next stage of operational growth.

UX improvements

The customer journey was rebuilt around cruise discovery, mobile usability and a clearer path to booking. Behind the scenes, CruiseFlow was shaped around day-to-day operations, giving the team a more connected way to manage cruises, customers, meals, payments, staff access and reporting.

SEO improvements

The migration focused on protecting useful search value while cleaning up weak legacy SEO. Important routes were retained or redirected, expired event pages were noindexed where appropriate, and the new site added clearer metadata, canonicals, sitemap coverage, speed improvements and stronger content structure.

Technical stack and delivery focus

VV Design rebuilt the public website on the client’s required CMS with a fully custom theme, then developed CruiseFlow as a bespoke operational platform designed around the way the team works day to day. The platform connects customer bookings, cruise schedules, food preorders, payment records, voucher balances, customer history, staff permissions, automated emails, reporting, hosting and operational logging into one managed system.

Business impact

The result is a cleaner customer booking journey and a more connected internal platform for staff, with ongoing development continuing as the business grows.
